General Information Belieze

The Goods

  • The country is poor but beauuuutiful.
  • The people are so friendly and willing to help you and even chat with you for hours.

Stuff to know before you go

* There are two seasons: Rainy season and Dry season. Pack accordingly.
* Belize is a big mixing pot of cultures. Hispanic, Indian, Creole/Afro-carib, Mennonite, Garifuna, Chinese, Mestizo, Mayan (native), and some others.
* Unless you know that the place your staying has wireless, bringing a laptop is useless. There are some internet cafe's around downtown San Ignácio that are fairly cheap (cents/hour).

Currency

* Currency is worth half the USD, meaning $10USD = $20 BZE dollars

Language
The two main languages are English and Spanish and most people are bilingual.

Visa information
US, Canadian, Australian, and EU citizens do not need a visa prior to arriving

Places/things to eat
Staples of the Belizean diet include: Rice…. And beans…. For breakfast, lunch, and dinner… with maybe some fruit, chicken, and tortilla wraps in there somewhere. Luckily, since there are so many different cultures in the country, there are some cool restaurants around with a tiny bit of variety (aka Indian food).

  • Belikin (The Beer of Belize) on tap is arguably more refreshing than H20 on any day.
  • Soy ice cream from Cayo Twist
  • Termites on the medicinal tour… yes, termites. They have tons of protein and taste like carrots.
  • Fresh coconut
  • The best pineapple you'll ever have
  • There are fresh fruit stands all over downtown San Ignácio, which are pretty enticing when it's 106 degrees out.
  • Home-made Plantain chips
  • La Loma Lúz Hospital. It's a 7th Day Adventist hospital that serves a vegetarian all-you-can eat lunch daily. Girls, since it's religious, don't dress like you're going out in South Florida or something, or you'll get some pretty dirty looks.

Cruises to Belize are popular for honeymoons and the like, but they take you to touristy cities on the coast. If you really want to do Belize, here it is…

What to pack

  • Clothing depends on the season. Either dress to sweat in 110degrees and dry/dusty weather or dress for rain.
