General Advice Exchanging money

Exchanging Money

  • Exchanging money can be a frustrating way to lose money. For the vast majority of countries ATM's are the way to go. Before you leave, if you can find a bank that waives all ATM usage fees transfer your funds to that bank. ATM's give the exact exchange rate at the moment of your withdrawal, and don't take a comission. If they do charge you a service fee, it will only be around 2-5 dollars which is better than most currency exchange services or banks.
  • Also, try and only withdraw the amount of money you will need. If you keep exchanging money at every border you will end up spending more money than you thought.
  • Coins are almost never accepted at exchange booths or banks. Your best bet is to spend all your change before you leave a country otherwise, it will be worthless when you arrive in your new destination.
  • Be careful when exchanging money on the street. Some people will try and tell you that your money is fake and switch real currency for fake. Don't fall for it. Look at your money and make sure its real before you make any transactions.

Special advise for vietnam
You will not be able to exchange vietnamese dong when you leave. Only exchange a small amount when you arrive in the country because if you have leftover dong and you are about to cross the border to another country, it will be very difficult/next to impossible to exchange it. Forcing you to spend all the money in Vietnam.
