Passport Theft Warning- Costa Rica
Another serious crime in Costa Rica is passport theft. In 2005, between January and June seven hundred eighty three passports were stolen, most were U.S passports. United States passports are a target for criminals looking to illegally enter the U.S. To be on the safe side, it is suggested to carry photocopies of passports. In the same way, passports should always be in a kept in a secure place, and not be taken where not necessary. Loosing a passport costs roughly $100. The country is having some difficulty keeping track of the passport thefts happening. However, the government hopes to soon track down passport theft across the country, by using a new database.Passports are stolen often in Costa Rica.

Keep xerox copies of your passport in all kinda places. Some cops have been know to ask to see your passport and then keep it in lieu of a bribe. If a cop or authority figure asks to see your passport on the street or in a suspect place, only show them the xerox copy.
