First off, Oktoberfest is something you must do at least once before you die. Absolutely. The biggest challenge of Oktoberfest is to get into a tent. There are 14 tents, which are run by local breweries. To have a tent, you must be a brewery in Munich. I got into the tent of Hacker-Festzelt, which is also known as "Himmel der Bayern" or "Heaven of Bavaria". I have heard that this is the best tent. All I know is that it is awesome and stupid hard to get into. I got in because of miraculous where a little kid was ran over by a drunk and all of the security rushed to the boy's aide, leaving the door wide open. Don't worry, the little guy was just fine, as was I. :) Those are the types of opportunities you need to look out for. As far as a place to stay, get ready to shell out some cash. Munich raises prices by double to triple for Oktoberfest. The cheapest option is to camp. I did not camp, so I have no further information on that. I stayed at a hostel. Book your hostel early! They go fast. I stayed at a place called the Hangover Hospital (yep, that is for real). It ended up being great. It is a temporary hostel (just for Oktoberfest) that is in a house not far from the train station. It is about 100 Euro for one night. The place is clean and the guys that run it are great.
