To and from airport

Renting a car might be a good idea if you are willing to drive in one of the three most dangerous countries on Earth according to Lonely Planet, together with Kenya and India, as for the driving skills of their inhabitants. Nevertheless, to rent a car in Jamaica is expensive unless you are ready to play cheap. Right outside the airport you might find sketchy Jamaicans offering you a car. Some of them might even be referred to you by a rental car officer. The deals are fair plus you will not worry about the car itself too much since it will be already in a not brilliant condition. There are also relatively cheap shuttles to Kingston and Montego Bay from both airports.

Around Jamaica

A rental car is my bet.

I am a bicyclist myself and love to ride everywhere. Jamaica, though, would be a country I would have to think about it twice before doing it.

Roads are narrow and shoulders are a privilege you will not find. On top of that, do not be surprised if you find people walking those roads, night and day, even though cars drive through quite fast.

Public transportation is not good outside Montego Bay and Kingston, where is not good either, but still. If you are willing to go around Jamaica you might consider a taxi (i.e. a station wagon loaded with people). And by loaded I mean that there is no room for anything else in the vehicle.

One more thing, hitchhiking is a possibility. People, outside the urban areas, are friendly and willing to spend some time talking to you.

To and from other countries

There are really cheap flights from Florida. Air Jamaica and Spirit Air are a must.
