1949 Hostel isn't bad. The rooms have extra beds stuffed into the rooms than should be, but the location is amazing. If you're less about comfort and more about location this place is the way to go. During high season (dec-jan) the prices double.

Try the Chivitos (local sandwiches). There's a place near the walk to the port, with giantic Chivitos
Nightlife
punta del este is a beach party place. Party till late in the morning, the place is pretty safe.
